Can Bacteria help in Mining?

Hello Friends,

Bactaria Mining cartoon.jpg

When we think about Mining we visualise heavy loaders or big trucks or heavy equipments.but do you know besides this big-big machines some small-small microorganisms also helps in mining just like earthworms for farmer and like squirrels in Ramayana helps Lord Rama to build the bridge.

One of the biggest mining company Vale is researching on copper eating bacteria to recover copper from tailings. In Mining industry ores are processed to separate metals from waste. however  after some extent when it is not either not possible or not feasible to further recover metal so they are treated as tailings and disposed to tailing dams.

Vale along with BNDES and university of SaoPaulo is researching for copper eating bactaria. These bactaria will be blended to the tailings which will eat copper from these waste and that copper can be recovered from bacteria, reprocess it and sold to market.According to Vale its Sessego mine tailing dam contains 90 million tons of 0.07% of copper grade detritus which due to its low grade cannot be recovered. so if this project get success all of this copper can be recovered which would value approx US$ 1.4 billions.this method is more popular as Bioleaching.

One another concern why mining companies is researching on this is that Bioleaching is more cleaner than other traditional method of recovering metals which require use of hazardous chemicals which may affect environment.

Message no. MILL105

Dear All,

Hope it is the right place.

It happens in posting goods-received inbound for subcontracting PO, to have the output material in the system.

it complains about PO's input material as below:

Message no. MILL105  Matl xxxxx Batch xxxxx: Negative stocks not allowed for single-unit batches.

Batch xxxx of material xxxx is a single-batch. The posting would result in a negative stock level of 0.008- for the batch.

On the component overview of the PO, the indicator 'Qty is fixed' is checked.

So it means there is still some calculation behind to end up error above.

Please advise.

Thanks

McKinsey Publication: Are you ready for the resource revolution?

McKinsey recently published in one of their newsletters a study on resource revolution. Working for industries that are very resource intense - or are producing resources, I thought that this was very mind opening thought.

You can find the study/article here:

http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/sustainability/are_you_ready_for_the_resource_revolution?cid=other-eml-nsl-mip-mck-oth-1404

One of the first thing that struck me - (and by the way, it is reality in my household as well) - a car is _not_ used for 95 % of its lifetime. What a waste of resources!

And comparable examples can be found in the industry many times.

McKinsey lists a couple of strategies how to handle this topic - and I was really wondering, how SAPs solutions can be used to help companies in making this stategies real.

The first strategy proposed by McKinsey is 'Substitution'. There are examples of how one material is replacing another material (e.g. eggs are replaced by a vegetable product called 'beyond egg'). Through SAPs collaboration solutions, I guess companies can really find it more easy to work together with engineers, researchers, laboratories, and so on when working on such a 'new material'. And also I am convinced, that the analytical capabilities make it possible to detect the areas, where a substitution of a specific material would make much sense.

What are the examples that you could think of?

I am curious about your ideas and thoughts that are triggered by this publication...

Does anyone have information about Fieldglass?

Hi Mills & Mining Community!

I am looking for use cases for Fieldglass in the Mining industry. I am building a PoV and will appreciate all the help I can get.

Specifically:

What are the main differentiators between Fieldglass and Ariba regarding procurement? What can Fieldglass do that Ariba can´t?

Is there available information about the average ROI in a Fieldglass deployment?

Which are the business benefits or business outcomes identified in Fieldglass customers? Cost savings? Decrease in permanent workforce? Benefits in compliance?

I understand that Fieldglass is pretty strong in being a Vendor Management System in Mining so if anyone has further information or knows whom should I reach to get it I will appreciate it very much.

Thanks in advance!

Mostly Cloudy

I know, a lot of things are written about Cloud and Cloud solutions - and I do not want to repeat to much of that. Still I think it is worth to take a look into what cloud means in Mill Products & Mining companies.

Generally, I have the impression, that we are certainly not among the frontrunners in this shift in deployment in these industries. And I think this is really logical - investments in asstes in these companies are long-term investments and are not that easy to build up or to close again. This kind of mental pattern is probably also used in IT investments.

When I talk to Mill Products & Mining people, I have the impression that it really depends on the region they are located, how savy they are on moving (parts of) their IT investment in the cloud. While I face a lot of hesitance in Europe, especially in Germany, I seem to run into open doors when I talk to people in Latin America.

And in addition, I find it very different, if I have a chat with someone from IT or with someone from the business. The business guys are usually rather positive - they see a lot of advantages in deploying a cloud solution:

  • it should be up and running in a very short timeframe so that they can start with a new/improved process rather quickly
  • they expect it to be easier to swap after some time - if necessary - to a new solution from another supplier
  • they see the specialised functionality provided for their business needs

The IT persons thoughts are a bit different usually - very often they see some potentially risky points in moving into the cloud:

  • what about integrating data that needs to go into / is coming from the cloud solution? Who takes care about this integration point?
  • what about downtime? Who is reliable if the business can not do their work due to whatever kind of failure (solution, network...)? It is just another layer adding complexity to the landscape.
  • What about data security?

And probably they are both right - and can probably learn a lot from each other. As I expect that cloud is here to stay for a good time, I think we need to make up our mind also on where we find a good fit also in Mill Products & Mining industries...

First of all - I would expect it is in areas, that are not sooooo different from other industries, so I would see it as a natural move to start with rather administrative processes such as:

  • MRO procurement
  • Travel expense reporting
  • Knowledge management/sharing tools

A little bit advanced, I would alredy see the usage in sales. As our products are on the one hand simple, but on the other hand are not that simple to reflect in the system (in SAP language, you usually use variant configuration and batches to a high degree), a consumer product type of approach in sales is feasable for Mill Products & Mining companies.

And the real value is probably in processes that are closer to where the value is created - in production, but that is something I see further down the line...

I would really like to hear some examples from you - are you on the IT side or on the business side? What is your thought on 'The Cloud'? From which part of the world are you?

The next wave in the Metals and Mining industries, Are we ready?

China was fixing prices for all raw materials until the last European crisis in US 2010, in fact is the main buyer for raw materials. Since that moment many of the commodities in special metals has been in the lowest price since 2010.

Now all companies count with many tools to do Business Intelligence.

  • What do you think will be the next factor that will push-up metals prices?
  • How IT will prepare SAP customers for the next wave?
  • It’s the industry prepared to satisfy all customers’ information requirements at that time?

I would like to get the impression of OUR COMMUNITY and what YOUR opinion is?

My best regards.

Merge production orders in background "MILL_OC_ORDER_MERGE"

Hello

I need to merge several production orders in background and the only bapi that i have found is the "MILL_OC_ORDER_MERGE" fm.

It has a parameter for background processing but still it brings the warning/error/info messages in foreground and also asks for user input in some cases.

I need a function module for background processing, that gives me the error/warnings as a log and there should be no user interaction required.

can anybody help?

Thank you

Sebastian

SAP MILL PRODUCT

We are looking for implementing SAP Mill product for cable industry.

Basically we are trying to understand the benefits of putting this solution.

Here are our requirements

Characteristics based planning (Planning to use PPDS )

Empty reel calculation (Do we need to use variant configuration for this)

Wants to see stock based on characteristics (I hope we can see stock based on batch characteristics)

Group and process order using characteristics values (Can we use batch characteristics for grouping order. Or should we use material characteristics)
